Grim

Present

“Sit.” I jerked my chin at the couch, and Caden and Rage hesitantly sat as they glanced at each other. “I think it’s time we talk about—” I let out a long, hard breath, “Her.” I flicked my eyes up to the ceiling, and they looked at each other again.

“Okay,” Rage drawled out hesitantly.

I paced in front of them, unsure of what to say. Where the fuck did I even start? She was my soulmate? That we still had our souls? I shoved my fingers through my hair. They were going to think I was nuts, I knew that, but they had to know the truth. Then, maybe they could find their mates and—that was fucking stupid. Rage with a soulmate? Poor fucking soul.

“She’s my soulmate,” I blurted, then winced. That wasn’t how I wanted it to come out. “She’s the girl I saved and the reason—”

“The reason you were sent away,” Caden finished, his voice low. “You’re saying she’s your soulmate.” He was staring at me like I’d lost my mind. I didn’t totally blame him. “You do realize we’re Reapers, right? Like, we reap souls? We don’t have them.”

“We do,” I insisted. “Wes found out—”

“Wait.” Rage held his hand up. “Wes? As in Wesley? The Reaper from the Council?” I nodded, and he let out a breath, then nodded for me to continue.

“He found out we have souls.”

“Oookay.” Caden drew the word out and shared a look with Rage. “Is this why you’re holding the girl hostage in your bedroom?”

“I’m not holding her hostage.” I squeezed my eyes shut. “I’m fucking this up. Fuck.”

“Start from the beginning,” Rage grumbled. “Wes found out we have souls. How?”

I explained everything. From saving Raven, to Wes finding the book, to starting the group with the guys, to how Wes showed me everything. I told them about Raven, how I’d been seeing her for the last few months and already knew who she was when we went home together after the club.

Rage didn’t look happy, but when did he ever? Caden looked…a bit shell-shocked. He stared at me, his mouth open, eyes wide. “Brody is going to lose his shit when he hears about this,” was the first thing he said. Then, “Holy shit, we have souls. I have a soul. And a soulmate.”

He got to his feet and began to pace around the room. I didn’t know what to do. Comfort him? How the fuck was I supposed to do that? I watched as he had a mini breakdown, then stared at the stairs that lead to the second floor.

“Does she know?” he asked, his hands on his hips.

“No,” I said. “She doesn’t—” I scrubbed my hand over my face. This was the part I wasn’t looking forward to. “She doesn’t know I’m Mason.” They snapped their heads to me.

“What?” Rage said. “How the fuck doesn’t she know that?”

“She’s only seen Grim with his mask on, and Mason was always in mortal clothes.” I shrugged and ran my hands down the front of my jeans.
